Horseshoe Bay in History

Horseshoe Bay began in 1971 as a lakeside retirement and resort community on the south shore of constant-level Lake LBJ when cousins Wayne and Norman Hurd completed acquisition of the Lupton Ranch and started construction of condominiums, a yacht club, marina, stables (now closed), airstrip, lighthouse, entry gate and water and waste disposal plants.

Land area was increased in 1972 with the acquisition of two adjacent ranches and construction began on the first of three golf courses. In 2005, residents voted to incorporate Horseshoe Bay as a Class A municipality.

Horseshoe Bay Today

Horseshoe Bay is a first-class retirement community and has matured into a premier resort destination since its inception in 1971. With a 347-room luxury Marriott resort hotel, the area boasts three championship golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., a lighted 18-hole par 72 Bermuda grass putting course, a spa and fitness center, swimming pools, tennis courts, a Yacht Club and full-service marina with charter service and boat rentals. Along with several restaurants, rental apartments, condos, villas, meeting space, and a private airport, Horseshoe Bay is an enticing getaway for family, vacation, and business travelers alike.

Horseshoe Bay is also a popular wedding venue and honeymoon destination. And, as a retirement community, Horseshoe Bay offers the opportunity to live in or maintain a vacation home on the waterfront, along a golf course, or on other choice real estate, all in a relaxed, country-living atmosphere.
